Google Sitemap Generator Tutorial

April 9th, 2007

Andre Chaperon has produced an excellent video tutorial on how to create an XML compliant Google sitemap for your site.

It works especially well with the Wordpress plugin “Google Sitemap Generator for WordPress v2 Final” produced by Arne Brachhold, but even if you do not use Wordpress, you can still benefit from the instruction provided in the relevant sections of the video.

The main benefit of creating an XML sitemap such as this is that it allows Google and other major search engines to more quickly and easily crawl your site with their spiders than they would otherwise. This means that all of the relevant pages on your website will get indexed and appear in the search results faster, leading directly to more traffic (and eventually more revenue) for you! In order to submit your sitemap to Google, you can log in to your Google account and look under the Webmaster Tools section to access this feature and view statistics related to any other sites that you have previously verified with Google.

UPDATE 08/27/08: After a much-needed review of my older posts for broken links and content backup, I have discovered that the Andre Chaperon video link is no longer working, so I have had to remove it. I have tried to search for a replacement video tutorial that I can embed into this post, but so far am not having much luck. If any of you manage to find or produce such a video, please let me know about it in the comment section so that I can add it to this page for the benefit of our readers.
