Are Americans Stupid?
July 15th, 2007While it may be too much of a generalization to say that Americans are stupid, many of them are certainly quite ignorant about certain topics, as this video clearly demonstrates:
Before anyone takes this too seriously, it should be noted that this is more of a humorous sketch than a scientific survey. However, the ignorance displayed by many Americans about things like geography, current events, and even “common sense” information is very real.
I have seen results from studies of high school and college students revealing that most of them could not locate the 50 states that comprise the United States on a map, for instance. Many of them could not even locate their own state on a map, while others thought that entities such as Canada, Mexico, New England, the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, or Europe were states.
Meanwhile, in this next video, Canadian reporter Rick Mercer travels to different parts of the United States and conducts some interesting experiments that expose the ignorance and general lack of critical thinking by many Americans:
As some of the commentators from the original YouTube postings of these videos point out, it is quite possible that the presentation is somewhat biased due to the producers selectively editing out correct responses to questions or other bits of footage that did not fit with the overall theme of the show. But it was still pretty funny to see how easily people could be duped into believing bogus news reports such as Russians invading Saskatchewan, or Canada having a “National Igloo” along with a 20-hour daily clock cycle. People even believed that Canada has two months of darkness in the months of July and August, which is completely illogical given the fact that in the northern hemisphere, the longer nights occur during the winter months, not the summer ones!
Oh, and for those of you who have not figured it out yet, Saskatchewan is actually a Canadian province…

According to Wiki: “Talking to Americans” attracted 2.7 million Canadian viewers, making it the highest-rated comedy special in the history of CBC.

I’m sure the show was edited to include only the funny stupid remarks - STILL - what a horrible picture of Americans.. Wonder if all the people gave permission to use their comments? Good grief!
Poor Saskatchewan - checked out their official website and listed under distinctions for the province:
* Saskatchewan is home to Canada’s only training academy for Royal Canadian Mounted Police recruits, located in Regina.
* Saskatchewan is the site of North America’s oldest bird sanctuary, established in 1887 at Last Mountain Lake.
* The city of Estevan in southeast Saskatchewan is Canada’s sunshine capital, averaging 2,540 sunshine-filled hours each year!
* Saskatchewan produces over 54% of the wheat grown in Canada.
* Saskatchewan has more road surface than any other province in Canada, with a total of 150,000 miles (250,000 km.)
* Saskatchewan is the only province with entirely man-made boundaries.

Oh well — As Aristotle and many others have noted:
‘All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.’
The U.S. is in the business of dumbing people down. Disinformation.
