Libertarian Shane Cory Sends Out August Update

August 16th, 2007

Libertarian Party Executive Director Shane Cory sent out his latest email update to the subscriber list today, summarizing some of the party’s accomplishments during 2007, informing us of the current status on ballot access issues, and making another pitch for some much-needed donations. If you happen to be a current LP member or are simply tired of the “business as usual” politics of the other parties, please consider voting with some of your dollars and making a donation. As I have discovered in my 13 years as a member, running an effective political party is a very difficult task, especially in a country such as the United States. Significant amounts of money and advertising are required just to be taken seriously, although once the momentum gets going and a certain critical mass is reached, our job should become somewhat easier due to free publicity from the major media outlets.

In the text of this update, I have reconstructed the active links from the email, including the one for an encouraging article from the Washington Times:

Dear Libertarian,

2007 is turning out to be a very good year for us:

* Membership has increased every month this year for a 20 percent total gain.

* Within just the past few months, media coverage for the LP has increased by approximately 79 percent.

* Ballot access drives are either running or will open very soon in three states with support and funding from the national party.

* Thanks to great volunteers stepping up to the plate, we’ve been able to “reactivate” three state parties that have been silent for the past few years.

* Most importantly, we’ve won nine out of the 27 races that we’ve entered this year – a 33 percent victory rate!

This has been possible because of the loyal support of our members and donors.

But we still have a great deal of work to do and 2008 is just around the corner!

* We need to, at the least, meet our 2004 accomplishment of having ballot access in 48 states. Currently we have access to the ballot in 26 states.

* We still have many hundreds of candidates to recruit for the 2008 season. This will take a great deal of time and manpower.

* Now that we’re making gains with “earned” media, we need to get the message out with radio, television and print advertising.

* To accomplish the above, now and in the future, we have to GROW THE PARTY! While we are making gains in membership, we are still less than half of the size that we were during our peak! We need new members and we need to bring back many more.

My office at Libertarian Party Headquarters is buzzing with activity as we now have on board two new staffers, Andrew Davis and Elizabeth Brooks, who have already been a tremendous help. These two staffers are filled with energy and can already claim much of the reason why the LP is on a positive path forward.

But despite our successes this year, I’m still concerned about our growth and our possibilities for 2008.

Public opinion and even the media are swinging our way as support for the two major parties is dissipating. We have a great deal of work to do and we don’t have the manpower or money to accomplish all that we need to make 2007 a true success.

Right now, I need funds for a new political director to take on candidate recruitment, along with tens of thousands of dollars to close out our 2007 petition drives.

In my inbox at this moment are requests from just two states for approximately $60,000 in funding. We’ll do what we can to help these states, but without your support we cannot offer much, if any, assistance in addition to what we’ve already committed elsewhere.

Can you help us by donating $15, $25, $50 or even $100? Please click here to contribute.

Your funds will go towards the core functions of the party which include prospecting for new members, ballot access petitioning and public outreach.

Also, if you have not taken the step to join the party or if you need to renew your membership, please take care of that today! By joining or renewing with the LP, you’re sending a message to the media along with the Republicans and Democrats – and they’re taking notice!

To prove this, read from a recent article in the Washington Times, “Libertarian ranks on the rise.” Within the article, which ran on July 10th, you’ll find a simple yet positive account of our membership gains this year, but to me, the most interesting element is the response of the Republicans and Democrats.

The Democrats didn’t bother to respond while the Republican press secretary closed with this: “despite the difficult political environment, people continue to be attracted to the fundamental ideals of the Republican Party.”

And what exactly are those fundamental ideals again . . .?

To the media and a small portion of the public, Libertarian principles are clear. We stand, unwavering, for a smaller government, lower taxes and much greater individual freedom.

Please take the time to support the Libertarian Party today by donating $15, $25, $50, $100 or more today. Click here to contribute.

I appreciate all that you do for our party.

In Liberty,

Shane Cory
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee
