Clearwire Survey Puts Another 35 Dollars in the Kitty

September 18th, 2007

Earlier tonight, I managed to complete another one of those Invoke interactive surveys, this time for $35 instead of the usual $25. Originally, the incentive amount was supposed to be $25, but I received an email yesterday informing me that they were increasing the amount of the incentive.

I am not sure of the exact reason for this; it is possible that they simply had fewer participants than expected who qualified for the survey through the original screener. If this was the case, they would have wanted to make sure that a large enough proportion of the people who qualified actually followed through to complete the main survey because they need a large enough sample size for the survey retain statistical significance. Here is what our invitation email looked like:

The topic of the survey centered around a relatively new telecommunications company called Clearwire. They are currently offering wireless Internet access service at speeds that are roughly comparable to low or mid-tier broadband connections. Their main selling point is that it is supposed to be an “always on, access anywhere” type of service, making it convenient for people who travel frequently or live in areas where other types of Internet service are not available or not very reliable.

Clearwire is planning to introduce a new information portal site similar to the Yahoo or Excite home pages, so we were able to see some of their beta versions of this during the survey and voted on what kinds of categories should be made visible or accessible from the portal. They are also trying to decide on names and logos for their new service. We were asked to choose among three tentative choices for names: Clear 360, Rapid 360, and XOHM.

From looking at the responses, almost no one wanted XOHM (nobody knew what the letters stood for, and it didn’t really convey any sort of positive message), and the votes for both Clear 360 and Rapid 360 were about equal. It looks like we will have to wait for the real marketing campaign to be unveiled before we will know which name the Clearwire executives will finally use.

Update 9/21/07: Greenfield Online has confirmed that the survey was completed successfully. I might have to wait a few weeks for my check, but I’m not really worried about this because I have been with this particular survey company for over three years, and they have always been reliable about sending payments.

Congratulations! This e-mail is to confirm that you have participated in survey 0703423 - NOC and completed the full qualitative online session.

As a thank you for participating in this survey you will receive a check for $35 in the next 6-8 weeks.

Thank you again for being an active and valuable member of our online panel.

Best Regards,

The Greenfield Online Team
