Libertarian Party Makes Last Ditch Fundraising Effort for 2007 Budget

January 3rd, 2008

libertarian-pary-logo.jpgI have received another fundraising letter from the national Libertarian Party today. The party is hoping to make up for a slight budget shortfall (compared to their annual projections) for the year 2007 so that there will be enough money available for advertising and ballot access efforts in 2008. An unfortunate side effect of the Ron Paul “revolution” is that his campaign has probably diverted some funds from donors who might have otherwise given more time or money to other libertarian causes such as the LP. If Ron Paul does not win the Republican nomination (it is very difficult for me to believe that the GOP establishment would ever allow this), there will not be many options left for liberty lovers, so it is worth considering the idea of helping out the LP as much as we can, even if it is only for a “protest vote”.

Below is the actual text of the letter. I have placed a link to the donation page at lp.org at the bottom of the page.

Dear Fellow Libertarian,

I need your help.

I’m not usually that blunt, but right now I have no choice.

We - you and I - are looking at perhaps the greatest opportunity the Libertarian Party has ever seen.

But we are also looking at what is easily the greatest challenge we have ever seen - by far!

And whether we seize this opportunity or fail to meet this challenge will depend greatly on what you decide to do after reading this letter.

You see, thanks to the support of freedom loving Americans like you, the Libertarian Party has made some truly remarkable gains over the past year - including a growth in membership of nearly 20 percent!

And right now, the political climate in American is ripe for us to move forward with even more growth - growth that will ultimately break the two-party stranglehold that has had such a devastating impact on our country.

Listen to the campaign rhetoric. Democrats and Republicans alike. They’re not seeking to make American a better place for us all, they’re all seeking to build their party’s power.

Democrat issues are far more important than American issues. Republican programs are far more important than American programs.

These people have all lost sight of the reasons they were elected in the first place.

And what makes this such a critical time for the Libertarian Party is that the American people are finally waking up to that reality.

They’ve watched helplessly as Republicans, who have traditionally claimed to be proponents of less government, have raised government interference in our lives to the highest levels in history.

They’ve watched in dismay as Democrats have advanced a socialist agenda to assure that all wealth in this country is equally shared by all individuals, no matter how much or how little they contributed to the creation of that wealth.

And they’ve watched in growing anger as the two parties’ refusal to cooperate means that almost nothing gets done and what does get done is usually wrong!

That’s why, as low as President Bush’s approval ratings are, Congress’ ratings are even lower!

So, as Americans feel hopeless and dismayed and angered at the performance of Democrats and Republicans alike, more and more of them are eager to embrace the fundamental principle of the Libertarian Party - to take power away from the government and return it to its rightful place with the individual!

That’s why Libertarian candidates continue to earn more and more votes in every election.

That’s why more and more of our candidates are winning elections at the local level. In 2007 alone, the Libertarian Party won 20% of its elections!

And that’s why I said at the beginning of this letter that we are looking at perhaps the greatest opportunity we have ever seen.

So what’s the challenge I also mentioned? What is keeping us from seizing that opportunity?

Two things actually.

The first is the simple, basic fact that the Republican-Democrat monopoly has seen our growth, has watched the American people beginning to move in the Libertarian direction, and are doing everything in their power to prevent that from happening!

Our efforts to gain (and maintain) Presidential ballot access in every state are facing major roadblocks as Democrat and Republican elected officials continue to enact new voting laws designed to keep us off their ballots.

They’re using the power they’ve built up over the decades to try and keep us from taking that power away from them.

But we’re no longer going to let them get away with that.

And that brings me to the second challenge we face: money.

Our essential budget for this year was set at $1.45 million. That’s a lot of money, but it was a budget based in realism and based on the willingness of staff and volunteers to work way above and beyond the norm to help us achieve our goals.

In short, that was the absolute minimum budget to give us any chance at the success we need.

There are two problems. One, as I mentioned, is the additional expenses we continue to face from Democrat and Republican efforts to deny us ballot access.

The other is simply this: our income hasn’t even reached the $1.45 million level we set!

We’re short. In fact, we’re short of where we need to be by 11 percent.

That’s devastating. Especially since we’re about to enter 2008, a national election year, with a shortfall right at the time we need to be doing more, not less.

Ballot access, get out the vote efforts, party building, promoting and spreading the Libertarian agenda at every level - these are essential efforts, not luxuries.

But, if we don’t erase this deficit, most if not all of it, we will be forced to drastically curtail those efforts.

We can’t afford to let that happen. American can’t afford for that to happen.

So here’s what I’m asking you to do today.

I’m asking you to consider a special, year-end gift today.

I firmly believe that together, we can overcome the challenges. Together, we can seize this opportunity.

Together, we can make 2008 a year of unparalleled advances for the Libertarian Party and for America - a year in which we make tremendous strides toward breaking the Democrat-Republican stranglehold on our nation’s political system!

Thank you for reading my letter and thank you for your past and present support of the Libertarian Party.

And may this holiday season be the very best ever for you, your loved ones and your friends.

Warmest regards,

Shane Cory
Executive Director

P.S. Believe me, any gift, whether it’s $20, $35, $50, $100, or any other amount will really help! Thanks!
