Gun Control Topics: Why Gun Bans Are Stupid
January 17th, 2008
When we think about the topic of gun control, most of us Libertarians would like to see it associated with the proper handling of a firearm, especially if this becomes necessary while defending oneself against a tyrannical government. Most politicians, however, believe that they can somehow control guns by restricting or criminalizing their ownership, resulting in a safer society with less violent crime. Here are 10 quick bullet points (pun somewhat intended) that can be used to defend our basic rights of self-defense against the misguided politicians and uninformed sheeple. Meanwhile, for a good laugh you can also read my report from last August that pointed out why gun buyback programs are just as stupid and ineffective as attempting to ban firearms outright.
1. When it comes to house burglaries, muggings, or even killing a few “undesirables”, gun control makes the job of criminals much easier. Although most anti-gun people remain blissfully ignorant, criminals generally do not obey stupid gun control laws even though their sheeplike victims often do.
2. Historically, authoritarian politicians have really liked the idea of gun control. As with the criminals, their job becomes easier too. Combined with the right dose of propaganda, they can easily oppress the sheeple when the latter have relinquished one of their primary tools of resistance.
3. Although many people may not realize it, there were actually fewer school shootings when gun laws were less restrictive. Amazingly, putting up all of those signs that read “Gun Free Drug Free School Zone” has not created any magical forcefields around the schools that would repel guns or prevent people from “going postal” even though they were entering a school instead of a post office. And of course, drugs have not been magically repelled either.
4. Seemingly “reasonable” gun control laws like waiting periods, trigger locks, etc. actually interfere with the basic right of self-defense. Believe me, you really don’t want to be stuck waiting for five days or fumbling around with a “safety” feature when a dangerous stalker is bearing down on you.
5. When the authors of the Bill of Rights wrote “the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”, they meant it, even if our current King George thinks that this document represents nothing more than a piece of paper.
6. Contrary to the apparent beliefs of gun control advocates, guns do not possess any abilities to run amok on their own. They actually require the presence of a user before any harm can be inflicted.
7. In the USA, states that do not allow concealed carry permits actually have higher violent crime rates that those that readily allow them according to a study of all county crime statistics conducted by John Lott and David Mustard during the years of 1977-1992.
8. One may not need an “assault weapon” to kill a deer, but it could come in handy during riots or natural disasters.
9. Countries such as Switzerland, where guns retained by ordinary citizens are in ample supply, have not seen their civilizations fall apart because of chaotic gun violence. Interestingly, they do not seem to attract very many terrorists either.
10. If you really think that having all legal firearms in the hands of only the police and military is going to protect you after a criminal has already entered your house, then I might have a relevant ebook or two to sell you.
In Kenneshaw, GA, when they made gun ownership mandatory, the crime rate plummeted. Crooks don’t want to go where folks are all armed.
@Cynthia:
Yes, I remember reading about that town in Georgia several years ago. As I recall, they required each head of household to retain at least one firearm for protection. I haven’t looked up the official statistics, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the crime rate declined as you mentioned.
