Amazon Associates Program Improves Design

October 20th, 2008

amazon-associate-logo.jpgWhile tracking down my affiliate link to the Amazon home page in response to a search query yesterday, I noticed that the company has redesigned our Associates Central section somewhat. Although the changes here did not seem to make much of a difference to me at first, when I went to the home page I noticed their new “site stripe” feature, which displays as a dark gray bar across the top of the screen. This bar has certain menu options that now make it much easier to create affiliate links from any page of the site. It also enables quick access to a few other things such as the latest news, earnings reports, and forum discussions.

The new quick linking feature is particularly useful because it should save me lots of time when linking to specific products. Previously when I wanted to insert a relevant link into one of my articles, for example a link to a book description product page from a book review article, I had to log into my account, use the Amazon search engine to find the specific title, and then navigate through a series of options just to extract the correct HTML text to paste into my article. Now all I need to do is go to the desired product page and click on the “Link to this page” option from the site stripe, after which the HTML code for the affiliate link to it is generated automatically.

Later in the day yesterday I received an email from Amazon that confirmed the new feature and explained a little more about recent developments. I have reprinted the text below; meanwhile, if you want to learn more about the Amazon Associates program, you can check out the article Why You Should Be An Amazon Associate from Gary Hess that I published earlier this month or my post from August about Amazon’s launch of their new Go Green section.

Dear Amazon Associate:

We are very excited to announce the launch of our newly redesigned Associates Central website. Since 1996, Amazon affiliate marketers have been advertising millions of new and used items, driving sales, and making money through the Amazon Associates program. And now with an improved website design that offers integration with the Amazon.com website and easy-to-use linking capabilities, earning referral fees has never been easier for Amazon Associates.

What’s new:

  1. Site Stripe: With the introduction of our Associates Site Stripe feature on Amazon.com, creating links to your favorite products and pages on the Amazon.com site is easier than ever. Site Stripe lets you build Associates links directly from the Amazon.com website so you can update your website more frequently, with fewer clicks and less time. Next time you go to Amazon.com you will see the Site Stripe at the top of any Amazon.com page you visit. You can visit our Site Stripe page to learn more about this exciting new feature.
  2. Linking to Amazon.com: Explore a variety of link and widget options with our new user-friendly design that helps you discover products to advertise that work best for your website and your customers, including product links and banners.
  3. A new look: Our improved website design makes it easier for you to navigate through the Associates Central website to find the information you need with fewer clicks. Check out our Get Started Tour to get a quick overview of the new site.

We’ve been listening to your feedback over the last year and we hope you’ll find that these changes improve your experience as an Amazon Associate and help you increase your ability to make money through the Amazon Associates program. As always, we’d love to hear your feedback about what you like and what you’d like to see improved, so please contact us and tell us what you think.

Over the next month, we’ll be sending you a series of emails that will provide additional detail on some of the new site features, followed by a survey to collect your feedback about the changes and your satisfaction with the program overall.

Also, be sure to check the Amazon Associates blog for regular updates on our program and promotions that can help you earn more referral fees.

The Amazon Associates Program

UPDATE 10/27/08: Amazon sent out another update today that provides further details on the new Site Stripe feature for Amazon associates. Here is the relevant text:

Dear Amazon Associate:

Last week we announced the launch of the newly redesigned Associates Central website, including the roll out of the new Site Stripe feature. We’d like to take this opportunity to tell you more about this new enhancement, which will make linking to Amazon.com even easier than ever.

The Site Stripe feature allows you to create links to your favorite products and pages on the Amazon.com site so you can update your website more frequently and with fewer clicks.

Here’s what you need to know about the Site Stripe:

If you are logged into your Amazon Associates account, the Site Stripe will automatically show up on the Amazon.com website just below the navigation bar (see example below):

There are four buttons available to you on the Site Stripe:

  1. ‘Link to this Page’: By clicking on this link, you will be taken directly to Associates Central and receive the HTML code needed to add that particular Amazon.com page to your website or blog. After visiting Associates Central, you’ll see a link to take you back to the same page on Amazon.com that you were on prior to clicking on the Site Stripe. This allows you to create links to any page on Amazon directly from Associates Central while browsing the Amazon.com site.
  2. ‘Add to aStore’: Adding links to your aStore is just as easy as creating text links. By clicking on this link, you will be taken to the Associates Central aStore configuration page where you can quickly add this product/link to your aStore. After visiting Associates Central, you’ll see a link to take you back to Amazon to continue shopping.
  3. ‘Your Earnings Report’: Keep track of your earnings with this shortcut to your earnings report directly from any page of the Amazon.com retail site. Find out where you are earning referral fees while navigating the Amazon.com site to add more links on your website or blog to products and pages that appeal to your readers, based on your earnings performance.
  4. ‘Settings’: The Settings tab allows you to configure your Site Stripe tabs as you like and also gives you the ability to turn off the Site Stripe if you would prefer not to see it while you are on the Amazon.com website. Please note that if you do turn off the Site Stripe, you will need to visit your Account Settings within Associates Central to turn it back on. All of your Site Stripe settings can be accessed there. You can always hide the Site Stripe at any time without turning it off. Just click on the “hide” button on the toolbar. To see it again, click on the “tab” at the top left.

We hope you’ll enjoy this new feature and want to hear your feedback about what you like and what you’d like to see improved.

I definitely like the last redesign they’ve done. It’s a lot more modern, and the tools for Amazon Associates have really improved. I especially like the new twitter feature for the Associate toolbar. I do a lot of work with Amazon e-commerce, so any amount of improvement that they make to the interface, is a big deal for me.

I hope they go ahead and update their forum system, that would be a big step as well.
