Long Term Blog Success Strategies

money-blogging-hub-pages.jpgThis article by Colin Callahan discusses some of the requirements for long term success in blogging, not the least of which is a large reserve of perseverance and a willingness to delay gratification until your blog’s cash flow shifts in your favor. So far my experience with this particular blog seems to confirm this, much to my chagrin.

Many people dream of working from home, and while it is difficult, it is not unattainable for someone with normal intellect, a strong work ethic, and a basic understanding of computers and blogging in general. Even though some find success, many find it too difficult and give up on the endeavor. When someone doesn’t find success, it is usually for one of two reasons. Sometimes blog owners expect their site to grow more quickly than it usually would, they think they’ll make more money than they actually do, and it is so disappointing that they choose to not continue blogging because its a waste of their time. The other thing that causes many bloggers to fail is a failure to develop a long-term plan. The key to profitable blogging is a willingness to develop a plan for the long term and stick to it through thick and thin.

The most important key to a successful blog is a large circulation of readers and/or targeted traffic from the search engines. The more people who visit your site, the more you will be paid per advertisement. Developing a large base of regular readers is perhaps the most difficult part of creating a profitable blog. With so many people blogging each day, sometimes it is not enough just to have an interesting topic or wonderful ability to write; you need to know how to market your blog and show it to the world.

All too often bloggers focus solely on the content that they post and spend no time driving traffic to their blogs. It is true that posting as often as possible is a one of the best ways to keep your blog ranked highly on the top ranked blog rolls and search engines, and when your visitors know that you update frequently they will come back to check your blog at least once per day. Still though, posting a million times a day doesn’t matter unless you have people who read your blog, so balance your time between posting content and marketing your blog. In order to turn a profit, try making fewer posts and using some of the time you would usually spend doing that to market your blog by making deals to exchange your links with other bloggers in your niche, developing relationships with other bloggers, and researching new ways to bring visitors to your site.

No matter how skilled you are at writing content or driving traffic, it takes time to establish your blog and garner significant traffic. Regardless of talent, it will take a few months to develop the links and a significant enough base of readers to generate revenue. Avoid getting discouraged during this time and use it as a learning experience. In order to keep yourself focused, set goals for for the number of updates you will make and how many visitors you should have, and then celebrate your success when you reach your goal. You will have deserved it!
