Amazon Now Sells Discount Contractor Supplies

March 5th, 2009

Undeterred by any economic recession, Amazon is now expanding their operations into the contractor supply business. This renowned e-commerce retailer has partnered with several of the major brands in this genre to offer bulk discounts and special promotions on professional contractor-grade equipment and supplies. All equipment can be delivered to your job site after purchase, and in some cases free shipping is available. You can visit the new contractor supply store here:

Within this section, you can shop by categories that are organized according to trade. Currently there are six major categories of products:

  1. Electrical supplies: includes wire strippers, testers, switches, wall outlets, circuit breakers, fuses, staplers, and more
  2. Plumbing: pipe wrenches, pipe cutters, hole saws, replacement parts, valves, and soldering equipment
  3. Framing: hammers, levels, circular saws, reciprocating saws, framing nailers
  4. Carpentry: routers, brad nailers, miter saws, table saws, finish nailers
  5. Painting: Paint sprayers, power sanders, tape, paint removers, surface protection
  6. Landscaping: mowers, blowers, string trimmers, manual landscaping tools, other outdoor power equipment accessories

There are also six additional categories for everyday supplies that may be required by contractors or other building enthusiasts regardless of specific trade:

  1. Accessories: tape, drill bits, saw blades, sander accessories, paint applicators
  2. Fasteners: nails, screws, nuts, staples
  3. Common Hand Tools: flashlights, utility knives, clamps, measuring tape, various multi-purpose tools
  4. Safety and Workwear: eye protection, ear protection, knee pads, masks, respirators, tool belts, organizers
  5. Job Site: temporary lighting, ladders, extension cords, wet/dry vacuums, plastic sheeting, surface protection
  6. Installed Products: bathroom fans, smoke detectors, thermostats, recessed lighting, doorknobs, lock sets

It will be interesting to see how Amazon fares with its foray into this industry. As I was going down the list of products, I realized that most of these things are exactly the same types of products that are currently being sold by major home improvement stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s. This means that Amazon will face some well-established competition in their efforts to expand their market. If they do well, it should present some good opportunities for affiliates because contractors are capable of generating a substantial amount of business if they have large projects that need to be completed.

Otherwise, they will need to be content with occasional sales of home improvement supplies to folks who like to tackle such projects themselves. The overall sales volume will likely depend on how well their prices compare to those of their major competitors, assuming that Amazon does a relatively good job of delivering the products on time and keeping shipping costs under control.

Wow - this is news…interesting stuff here. I found a Stanley 95-112 Tripod LED Flashlight for $19.99. Boy, I could have used this while doing some repairs under the kitchen sink. I’m going to look around some more on the site. Could find some useful items and bargains for regular folks - not just contractors.
