Sushi for a Song in Scottsdale, Arizona

March 27th, 2009

sushi-scottsdale-arizona.jpgIf you happen to live in the Scottsdale, Arizona area or are thinking about traveling there, this article by Lois Lawrence recommends three local restaurants where you can satisfy your appetite for sushi along with an assortment of exotic drinks for a relatively low price. At the bottom of the page, the author has also included the relevant addresses, phone numbers, and “happy hour” times for each of these three establishments.

Anyone looking for date night on a dime in Scottsdale, Arizona should try a little bar-hopping. Sushi bar, that is. The key to scoring great food and drink for a song while making the evening last long enough to thoroughly enjoy it is taking advantage of the overlapping Happy Hour specials offered by three great little downtown restaurants on or near North Scottsdale Road.

Begin at RA Sushi in the heart of Old Town where, between 3:00 and 7:00 Monday through Saturday, you can kick off the evening with a carafe of hot sake for a dollar or an icy martini made with sake and vodka called, aptly, a Saketini for $4.

Order up the signature appetizer, Rakin Shrimp, a generous dish of about fourteen crispy, well-spiced shrimp with dipping sauce for $5 and you are off to a good start. When you are ready for more, try a California Roll for $2.50 or a Yellowfin Tuna Roll for $3.00. Wash it down with a Kirin Sake Bomber for $5.00 while you watch from the restaurant’s comfortable terrace.

When it’s time to move on, cross the street and stroll a few blocks North to nearby Stingray Sushi where Happy Hour goes until 7:00, Monday through Friday. There, even if you’ve tired of $1 hot sake, you’ll find all specialty drinks at half price and a good selection of discounted beers and wines. The specials include a selection of rolls ranging from Spicy Tuna for $3 to a Dragon Roll for $5. If you want a break from sushi, share an order of Chicken Tempura for $5.

Your third stop is another short stroll away, this time down Drinkwater Boulevard to Pearl Sushi Lounge. Here, Happy Hour is a little trickier with the deepest discounts in the first hour. However if you settle on a Monday for your night out, you can take advantage of Industry Night at Pearl and order half price drinks, including full bottles of wine, until closing. Food is a great deal all night as well with 25% across-the-menu discounts. (The same deal is available Tuesdays through Saturdays between 10:00 and Midnight during what Pearl calls its Reverse Happy Hour.)

Set out one night soon on the sushi tour of Scottsdale and, before you know it, you will have filled your evening without emptying your pockets. That means there will be plenty of cash left for a safe cab ride home to insure many more happy hours in the future.
