How to Back Up Your Laptop’s Data

September 25th, 2009

laptop-backup-data.jpgIt seems like everyone has a laptop nowadays. With all of the convenient, lightweight, portable, and fast models out there, is it any wonder? Yet many laptop users don’t think about backing up the data on their machines.

The laptop was designed for “on the go” use, so many people don’t remember how much important information is on their laptop until they suffer from data loss.

Why Backups Are Important

While almost 90 percent of computer users know that they should backup data (according to a 2005 study), very few actually do backup on a regular basis.

Backups are arguably even more important for laptops, because they are particularly vulnerable machines. They’re easier to steal, overheat, spill liquids on, or even drop. Once that data is gone, recovering it can be hard, expensive, and bothersome. Why not avoid all that trouble in the first place and take a little time to set up a backup system? Then, even if you lose the laptop completely, you’ll still have your important data.

Between 600,000 and one million laptops are stolen in the USA alone each year; worldwide, the number must be staggering. One source estimates that fewer than 20 percent of computer users (including desktop users) backup their data on a regular basis. When you look at these numbers, think of the millions of digital photos, notes, recipes, chat logs, emails, and other precious records that have been lost forever by users who didn’t backup… to say nothing of the valuable financial or business information that could have been on their machines!

How to Backup Laptop Data

There are many options for backing up your laptop. Some of these options include online backup systems, external hard drives, or simply backing up to CD’s or DVD’s.

Burning information to a CD or DVD is one of the simplest methods. Most recent laptops have CD/DVD burning capabilities, and an investment in a sturdy CD case and a spindle of CD-R’s or DVD-R’s will serve you well. You could also consider a CD-RW or DVD-RW, which will allow you to write information to the CD or DVD over and over. Just make sure your laptop has the capability to write those types of disks first!

You might prefer to use one of the many software solutions available for backing up nearly any operating system to an external hard drive regularly; you can then keep that hard drive somewhere secure. Research some systems and find the one that has the capabilities you need at a price you can afford.

Another idea is to use an online backup solution. These are increasing in number as people realize how convenient and secure they are.

Backing up is unquestionably one of the best things you can do as a laptop user. Save yourself aggravation by taking a few minutes to plan ahead now!
