This morning I received an email from Kmart saying that they are increasing their commission rate from 2% to 4%. This comes as a pleasant surprise at a time when many affiliate programs have been reducing commissions, raising sales requirements on tiered structures, and monopolizing PPC traffic by placing increasing numbers of restrictions on the keywords that affiliates are allowed to use for ad campaigns.
Kmart’s new 4% rate puts them on par with Amazon for physical goods promotion. Their program is available through the Google affiliate network along with many other merchants. Meanwhile, if you happen to be in the mood for some shopping, I have placed the promotional link that goes to the Kmart website in the newsletter text below. You can use the coupon code to save $5 on orders of $50 or more.

The ideas inherent in feng shui emerged from the needs of humans to codify information about the world surrounding them. Different schools of feng shui developed and relied on different tools for interpreting the notion that person and place were connected in profound ways.
The traditional form school is one which bases its findings on interpreting the shapes of objects in the physical world. The other is the compass school, which analyzes spaces based on a magnetic needle centered within circles representing up to thirty-six different categories.

Some years ago we had the experience of implementing universal bathroom design when working on a large bathroom for a man and his wife who were both confined to wheelchairs. The result was no ordinary 5-by-7-foot bathroom, to be sure. It had to be large enough for both of them to maneuver around in it at the same time, and while they did need assistance with some things such as bathing, they wanted to be able to handle other aspects like brushing their teeth by themselves. This was accomplished by elevating the sinks high enough so that they could wheel right up to them. In addition, the pipes below were pitched so they wouldn’t interfere with the wheelchairs, and we even padded them in case anyone bumped into them with their knees. The result was surprisingly inviting: It was convenient for the homeowners, and it had great style. It gave them pride in their home and complemented their lifestyle, which should be the goals of any bathroom no matter what.

This article from my collection on skiing and snowboarding describes six basic skills that people need to develop when they first learn how to ski. Learning these skills will allow you to stop, turn, and even move uphill more effectively, thus increasing your skiing level and moving you closer to expert status.
1. The Star Turn
To change direction while standing still, practice the simple star turn. Imagine that your skis are the hands of a clock, with the tips pointing toward noon and the tails as the center of the dial. Pivot one ski by lifting the tip but not the tail and turning the tip until it’s pointing toward 2 o’clock. Place the ski firmly on the snow. Now pivot the second ski, tip up, tail down, until it’s parallel with the first. Remember to use your poles for balance.

Here’s a bathroom water heater scenario that I’ve heard about one too many times. A homeowner decides to add a giant whirlpool tub to his or her bathroom, and imagines coming home from work and soaking away all the stresses and strains of the day. The hot water comes churning out of the faucet at first, but before the tub is even 4 inches full, it’s colder than a glass of iced tea in August.
Although you can get away with a limited amount of hot water in the kitchen (after all, just how many gallons does it take to fill a sink), the same is not true in the bathroom. Fill up the tub, or take a long shower, or try to have an entire family get ready for the day at the same time, and the hot water could run out. Guaranteeing a steady supply of hot water when you want it is a major factor in a bathroom’s success, and here’s how I think you should go about it.

Although I have not posted anything in the Politics section for a while, earlier this week Wes Benedict sent out this nice little summary article that looks like it might be useful for some of you. Currently we are drawing close to the filing deadlines for candidates to run in the 2010 elections here in Texas, and the deadlines for other states will follow shortly thereafter. This means that if you have become fed up enough with the current situation that you want to run for office, you will need to think about getting your paperwork in order pretty soon so that your name will make it onto the ballot by next November.

This article on searching for and purchasing auto insurance online was sent in this morning by Zamir Anjum. As with most things, this has turned out to be a case of getting what one pays for in terms of overall value. The low price made it an attractive deal and gave me a chance to try out a new author, but the article (actually two short articles with similar content that I have combined into one) has required so much editing and rewriting work that it’s costing me more in time than the monetary savings is worth. Still, after doing the editing it does contain some good general tips for buying car insurance online.
