The Power of Free

September 16th, 2010

free-internet-marketing.jpgThere are many great companies on the Internet who are never found in search engines. It is foolish to think that if you have a great product and a flashy website, then people will come. With millions of websites on the World Wide Web, even the best companies can be overlooked. The challenge is finding cyber viewers and getting them to click over to your site.

There are many ways to drive traffic, but in general you would do well to have good SEO (search engine optimization). The name of your website should be relevant to the content and contain search words. You can also use click farms and link exchanges, but the quality of traffic from the sources is usually quite low. There is another method of driving people to your website that you may not have thought of — give it away for free.

Of course you can’t just give your main product or service away for free. After all, the objective is to make money. What you can do is put the power of free to work for you. Find something that you can promote as free on your website. This could be a free trial of your service, a free coupon, a free sample, a free consultation, or a free estimate. Think about your business and come up with anything that you can offer for free. This should be something that will promote your product or service and encourage people to buy.

When you have your idea for a freebee, the next step is to incorporate it on your website. It should be large, eye catching, and easy to find. Do not make your free promotion an image on your website. You can use an image, but you must make sure that the word “free” is in text and searchable. Write a paragraph telling customers how to get the free item. You can use a sign-up form on the website, require them to send an email, or require the customer to call your business. It should be easy for the customer to access the freebee. Clearly state the terms involved in obtaining the item.

Once your website is ready, it is time to advertise your free item. Incorporate it into your regular advertising. Any advertising that is not on the Internet should direct customers to your website to get information on the free item. This will get people going to your website and give you organic traffic, where people type the address into the search bar and go directly to your website.

Next, promote your free item on the Internet. A great place to start is TotallyFreeStuff.com. You will need to register as a user, then you can submit your free stuff to be listed on their site. After your submission is approved, sit back and watch the traffic on your website go up. Freebee seekers will be visiting your site in droves. Other websites that promote free items will also pick up your ad. Soon you will see your traffic numbers climb steadily.

Make sure that you are ready. If you are giving away a free sample, you need to be prepared to send out literally thousands of them. One candle company started offering a free candle sample. Their website traffic had been so slow that they never expected to have more than a few dozen requests. Soon, they were completely overwhelmed with free sample requests. The cost of sending the free samples very nearly put them out of business. Luckily, this freebee campaign was successful in getting people to come back to the website and buy candles. Otherwise, it could have been disastrous. So, be careful with free samples. It can cost a lot of money to mail thousands of samples, even if the shipping is only $1 each. You can require that people pay the shipping to get the sample. If you are offering a free coupon, you may want to email it to them or allow them to print it from your website.

Don’t forget to take advantage of information you gather when someone requests your freebee. Keep a database of the names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails of everyone who requested your free item. This can be a great source of sales leads for direct marketing campaigns.

The power of free can be a great tool for driving traffic to your website. Carefully choose an item that you can afford to give away at no cost to the customer, and get the word out that you are giving something away for free. You will be delighted when your website starts getting more traffic than ever before.

Good article… I know a few people who assumed all they had to do was put up a website…done! Yeah, after a few months, they had sold very little. Pays to do your homework.
