How to Manage Your Twitter Lists

February 24th, 2011

When you go to the Twitter homepage and log in with your username and password, you will see a tab at the top of the screen called “Lists.” Lists function like miniature timelines. You can create different lists and populate them with your favorite Twitter users. This way, you have the ability to view tweets from only certain groups of individuals.

To get started, click on the “Lists” tab and then select the “Create a list” option. A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to choose a name, description, and privacy type for your new list. Keep in mind that names are used to differentiate your lists, so pick one that relates to the type of Twitter users you plan to include. For example, you might want to create a list called “Celebrities” or one called “Athletes.” You do not have to enter a description for your new list, but if you plan to share it with other people, you may want to write a quick sentence explaining the purpose of the list. Before you finish creating your list, you must decide whether to make it public or private. Public lists will be visible to all Twitter users, and people will also be able to follow your list if they like the group you created. If you do not want others to be able to see the contents of your list, choose the private option. When you are done, press “Save list.”

You will now be taken to your list’s page, which is blank since you have not added any users to it yet. When you come across a Twitter user that you want to add to your list, click on the small icon at the top of the user’s timeline with several short horizontal lines. You will see a drop-down menu with the names of each of your lists. Check the box next to the name of the list you want to add the person to, and now when you go back to view your list page, you will see that individual’s posts. To help find people to populate your lists, use the “Search” feature at the top of the page or look through your list of followers. If you make a mistake and want to remove a person from a list, simply go back to the user’s timeline, press the same button again and uncheck the list name.

Twitter also lets you modify the properties of your lists after they have been created. To do so, go to the list page and click on the “Edit” button at the top. This allows you to change the list’s name, description, and privacy type. Press “Save list” when you are done, and keep in mind that all list names must start with an upper or lowercase letter. You can also get rid of a list entirely by clicking on the “Delete” button at the top of the list page. A dialog box will appear to ask you to confirm your decision to delete the list.

One important thing to remember about the concept of Twitter lists is that you do not have to be following a user in order to add him or her to a list. This way, you can avoid reading the same tweets in your primary timeline and your list timeline. For example, you might follow one actress because you want to see her tweets in your main timeline, but you might add a baseball player to your “Athletes” list because you would rather only see his tweets there.
