Zürich’s tourist attractions include the beautiful Lake Zürich and the picturesque River Limmat, the historic old town, a vibrant nightlife and one of the world’s most luxurious shopping streets, the famous Bahnhofstrasse. Zürich also has over 100 art galleries, and the city is home to more than 50 museums.

Explore Zürich’s Historic Old Town

Zürich’s historic old town is located in a pretty spot by the Limmat River. The well-maintained old town is home to medieval buildings, old churches, and beautifully kept squares. The Romanesque cathedral Grossmünster is famous for its two towers that reach up to 62 metres, the magnificent Peterskirche is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Zürich, and the city’s oldest church is the 9th century Gothic cathedral Fraümunster.

Zürich has over 100 art galleries and over 50 museums, enough to keep most culture lovers busy for days. The Kunsthaus is one of the most important art museums in Switzerland, the Rietberg offers a collection of Asian and African art, and the Landesmuseum, or National Museum, has an excellent exhibition about the history and culture of Switzerland.

Shopping and Clubbing in Zürich

The luxurious Bahnhofstrasse is Zürich’s most famous shopping street. It runs from the main railway station, or Hauptbahnhof, to the lakeshore. One of Europe’s most elegant shopping streets, Bahnhofstrasse is home to jewellery stores, designer boutiques, and several luxury shopping centres. Bahnhofstrasse is where the rich and famous from around the world come to shop when visiting Switzerland.

Zürich is known for its vibrant nightlife and the city has more nightclubs per resident than any other city in Europe. Many clubs don’t have official closing times and the party usually goes on until the early hours of the morning. Zürich also has a lively gay club scene, and the annual Street Parade is one of Europe’s biggest street parties.

Sightseeing and Tours in Zürich

A great way to spend an afternoon in Zürich is a sightseeing trip on one of the steamboats that operate on Lake Zürich. The lakeshore and the riverbank are also idyllic places for independent sightseeing and walking tours.

The Uetliberg Mountain offers fantastic views, and visitors can walk to the top of the mountain or take a local train from Zürich’s main railway station. There is a restaurant at the top of Uetliberg, and in addition to great food it has a terrace that offers beautiful views over Zürich and the surrounding areas.
